H2 tags : SPITFIRE AIRCRAFT MODELS HANCRAFTED IN PEWTER BY BRITISH CRAFTSMEN. On the 5th of March 2011 the Spitfire celebrated its 75th anniversary. 75 years earlier on the morning of March the 5th 1936 the Supermarine type 300 first took to the skies and was named 'Spitfire'. Designed by R J Mitchell, with its distinctive eliptical wing and powered by the Rolls Royce Merlin engine few at the time would believe that this aircraft would become a legend in aviation. The Spitfire would be extensively developed over the following years flying faster and higher with greater agility and carrying ever more powerfull armament. Operating in all theatres during the Second World War the Spitfire would contribute significantly to the defeat of the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain, provide vital aerial photographic intelligence, operate from aircraft carriers, support the invasion troops on D-Day and play its part in many subsequent conflicts. To commemorate the 75th anniversary of this iconic aircraft Diverse Images has launched this website which forms a record of every Spitfire produced by us over the past fifteen years. Some of the Spitfire models have finished their production run and are now only available on the secondary market. Whilst we believe the collection is already unrivalled, we intend to produce many more versions including aircraft as rare as the Supermarine type 224. Happy browsing!! |
