| H1 tags : Upcoming Events; Latest News Although the calendar tells us that the year begins in January, I’ve always thought the year begins in the Fall with the start of the school year. Students have arrived with new shoes and backpacks filled with school supplies. And, while flash drives and laptops have replaced library paste and pink erasers, you can still smell freshly sharpened pencils, along with fresh paper notebooks. The Concept School, as well, continues to hold on to “concepts” of education that are tried and true, but evolving to actually teach students how to learn, not repeat rote memorization. Technology is only a tool if teachers can use it to facilitate the students’ own discoveries and guide them to develop in-depth research questions. Schools were created to provide the 19th century factory system with workers based on 18th century philosophies about who could and could not learn. And, we wonder why the traditional system doesn’t meet our need today! The Concept School, as always, seeks to guide the whole student through the learning process, developing our tools and techniques daily. This year we will focus on the development of the adolescent brain. Yes, there really is a good one in their heads, even if it doesn’t always seem that way. With the support of our school psychologist, we will explore the latest research and develop even better methods of instruction and guidance for our students. Parents will be able to take advantage of the current research and the TCS application through their ongoing interactions with teachers and staff. Parents are able to borrow some materials for themselves. Fall is surely blowing in upon us. Come join us on Back to School Night and the Family Work Day Picnic to re-discover why The Concept School remains a wonderful learning community.
